Eric Bailly now leaves Man United on a permanent basis.
When the transfer window slammed shut last Friday, we all just assumed that’d be it in terms of incomings and outgoings. Apparently, we were mistaken.
With some windows still open, there would be opportunities for some fringe players to leave Old Trafford. Well, that has now happened.
The official club website confirmed this morning that Eric Bailly has departed from the Theatre of Dreams.
It’s a permanent exit for the 29-year-old defender, who heads to Turkey after 113 Reds appearances. He’ll play for Besiktas for the 2023/24 season.
Bailly was the first signing made by Jose Mourinho, with the centre-back having a superb debut season that saw him rank among the best defenders in the country. He’d end that year with two trophies.
However, since then, injuries would plague his career. We’re now seven years later and to play a little over 100 appearances for the club tells the whole story. That averages out at less than 20 appearances per season.
Nobody can deny his natural talent and ability. Bailly had the potential to become one of the best in the business in his position. However, his body just couldn’t hold up.
Those issue are partly due to his aggressive, enthusiastic playing style. Not many players put as much effort into the game as Bailly did. Sometimes, that was to his detriment.
One thing that we can probably all agree on is that Bailly was entertaining to watch. He’d always do something pretty bizarre at some point over the course of the match and that mystery always had us all watching on keenly.
No doubt he’ll be a super signing for Besiktas, assuming he can stay fit. Aged 29, he’s at that stage in his career where he absolutely needs to be playing week-in-week-out. I genuinely hope he is given that opportunity.
All the best, Eric!
