Erik ten Hag and Jadon Sancho now have a relationship that is beyond repair…
As soon as he walked through the door, Erik ten Hag made it clear that he was the boss. First of all, I have no problem with that. This squad has been desperate for an authoritative figure to take charge and show everyone who is boss.
The gaffer dealt with the Cristiano Ronaldo saga brilliantly. If he can keep the biggest of egos in check, it sets an excellent precedent going forward.
Jadon Sancho decided that this season it’d be a good idea to test Ten Hag’s authority. After the manager questioned Sancho’s training performances, the Englishman released a statement claiming that he was being made a scapegoat. We haven’t seen Sancho out on the field since.
Now, I (subscription required) have provided an update on the saga. They state that Ten Hag’s relationship with the 23-year-old player is beyond repair, according to sources close to the situation. The gaffer has the backing of major club officials like John Murtough and Richard Arnold.
There are many issues with Sancho, according to the club. One is around a lack of sleep due to staying up late and playing computer games, while his timekeeping has also been brought up on numerous occasions.
Understandably, the PFA and Premier League are keen to find a resolution, particularly as Sancho cited mental health issues when away from the squad for many months last year. The powers-that-be do not want the player to feel alone in this situation. Rightly so, too.
The verdict
It’s just a sad situation all-round. Sancho is an excellent player when he wants to be, while United could have absolutely utilised his talent on the right-wing right now. I guess we’ll never know what could have been if he didn’t release that social media post, because a day later he would have been first-choice in that area of the field.
I genuinely don’t see a resolution here, with Sancho likely to be out the exit door as soon as January rolls around. I do hope a top tier club does take a punt on him though as he’s a brilliant player.
