Tomas Soucek is a West Ham United cult hero.
West Ham beat Newcastle 2-0 on Monday night, and Tomas Soucek got us up and running with a brilliant header inside the first 10 minutes.
Soucek is ‘proper West Ham’ there’s no doubt about that.
He bleeds claret and blue, gives everything for the club, and always takes time to stop and speak with fans when he’s not playing.
I’m hoping that he remains with us for many more years yet, and adds to his cult hero status in the process.
Soucek now stands alone in one particular category for West Ham in the Premier League era.
Tomas Soucek broke record for West Ham vs Newcastle
The former Slavia Prague midfielder continues to play a key role for the Hammers this season.
His goal against the Magpies on Monday night came at a really crucial time for us, and he put in a rock solid performance.
And despite the criticism he continues to receive from some fans, Soucek broke a big record for the Hammers up on Tyneside.
After his goal against Newcastle on Monday night, Soucek became the first midfielder for West Ham in Premier League history to score 30 Premier League ‘non-penalty’ goals.
Mark Noble is the only midfielder to have scored more Premier League goals for the Hammers than Soucek, but only 19 of those were non-penalty goals.
Soucek has now bagged 35 goals in 220 games for West Ham (Transfermarkt).
The 29-year-old is quite clearly an incredibly important player for the Hammer.
When Julen Lopetegui replaced David Moyes at the London Stadium in the summer, the Czech Republic international was heavily tipped to join the Scot out the exit door.
However, he has proven himself once again to be indispensable to this team.
I wonder if Tomas Soucek will ever get the appreciation and respect that he deserves from the West Ham fans.
