Man United are still being linked with a move to sign Denzel Dumfries – though he would not be cheap…
It seems clear that Manchester United are still not fully convinced by their options at right-back. Aaron Wan-Bissaka wasn’t in Erik ten Hag’s plans initially despite recent improvement, while Diogo Dalot just doesn’t look up to standard.
Several names have been linked with potentially filling that void since Ten Hag took charge. Perhaps none more so than Denzel Dumfries, though all did go quiet on that front recently.
Calciomercato (relaying information from La Gazzetta), provide a small but potentially important update on Dumfries’ future.
They state that Inter ‘don’t want to deprive’ themselves of the Dutch full-back, and they want to renew his contract. However, there’s interest from the Premier League.
United are still being linked with a move to sign the 27-year-old full-back, while Chelsea are also credited with interest.
That said, Dumfries will not come cheaply. Inter ‘will not say yes’ for anything less than €50m (£43.5m), as they do not want to lose a key asset.
The verdict
Dumfries is certainly an interesting one. He’s also a player that will blow hot and cold, though his highs are far higher than both Dalot and Wan-Bissaka. Is he worth £43m+? I’m not so sure.
This feels like a move that’d be more likely to happen in a summer transfer window rather than a mid-season one. United wouldn’t have the funds required to make this deal happen in January even if they wanted to, particularly while current club ownership remains up in the air.
