Man United are now sweating on the fitness of Jonny Evans, following an injury suffered against Copenhagen.
Honestly, I’m getting sick of talking about Manchester United’s treatment table woes, but it feels like after every game, the Reds lose another player through injury. At what point does it stop becoming an excuse and start become a pivotal factor behind our poor form?
As soon as United get one player back, it feels like they then lose two more. It’s undoubtedly super frustrating for Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff, who lost yet another player last night.
This time around it’s Jonny Evans. The Northern Irishman has actually been preferred to Raphael Varane of late, though he had to come off in the first half, dealing United another injury blow.
The Reds are now sweating on the fitness of the veteran defender, with Ten Hag admitting ‘we have to see how bad it is’ before offering some firm news on a potential timeframe for his absence.
Check out what Ten Hag had to say when asked about Evans’ fitness here:
“I’m not sure in this moment. He has to come off,” Ten Hag said after the game, per the MEN.”I think it was a pity because he was part of it from that good part in the game where we were controlling, very composed and calm, it’s the way I see my team.”
“Yeah, but he had to come off and I think still we are in control, still we are leading. So we have to see how bad it is. It’s not about 11 players. We have more players and we have good players, so we have good replacements to solve that.”
At this point I’m not actually sure what area is affected. There wasn’t much discussion about Evans possibly staying on and it felt like he knew pretty much straight away he had to come off – which does leave me worried.
I’ve been pretty vocal about how weird it is seeing Evans start over Varane, though you look at the Frenchman’s performance when he came on and it was a major cause for concern. Perhaps Ten Hag isn’t seeing enough from the World Cup winner in training right now. He also could have had his head turned by the potential big-money offer from Saudi Arabia.
United have been bad defensively even with everyone fit this term, so I dread to think how bad it’s going to get over the next few weeks when the only fit defenders we have are Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and the aforementioned Varane…
