Mason Mount is still firmly in Erik ten Hag’s plans, with the midfielder having to wait patiently for his chance.
This season has certainly been disappointing. Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United would have entered the campaign feeling confident about kicking on after an excellent debut season under the Dutchman.
Some important signings were made. A new goalkeeper, a talented striker and another midfielder in the form of Mason Mount. The Englishman felt like the number one priority for the Red Devils boss, upon his departure from Chelsea.
He’d start brightly in the first two games, looking lively in the heart of midfield. Then, injury struck. The midfielder would miss over a month, which would not only dampen his spirits, but also make it tough for Mount to actually get himself out on the field.
We’ve barely seen the midfielder since his return, leaving us all scratching our heads as to why he was signed in the first place.
Well, Ten Hag has somewhat quelled those fears, claiming his situation ‘hasn’t changed’. He’d add that the United star ‘will have to wait’ for his minutes after his somewhat slow start to the campaign. No doubt that opportunity will arise eventually.

“It hasn’t changed at all,” replied Ten Hag to ManUtd.com, when asked if his expectation when signing Mount has changed. “He started the season and then he got injured.“
“That is the worst moment for a new player to get injured because it stops their integration process.
“That was a setback – for us and for him. He now has to fight his way back.”
“He had some starts, also recently against Newcastle last week, for instance.”
“But there are always reasons and sometimes, like I say, the injury means other players coming in and doing well. Then you have to wait for your time to play.”
What the gaffer is saying does make perfect sense, though it doesn’t make it any less frustrating for both fans and player. Mount looked super excited to be joining the Old Trafford club over the summer. That initial promise has already died down. It’s now going to be an uphill battle for the 24-year-old to earn regular minutes.
I firmly believe he has what it takes. I actually think he’s the perfect central midfielder for Ten Hag’s system, due to his sheer work ethic and on-ball quality. He just has to be ready for the opportunity when it comes his way.
I’d love to see him out on the field against Luton Town tomorrow. It’s a game during which the opposition will sit back and Mount can not only pick those passes, but also lead the press and force the opponents into mistakes.
