Marcus Rashford is struggling right now, with Alan Shearer the latest to weigh in on the situation.
That Manchester United dressing room is not a confident place right now. Erik ten Hag’s side have actually won more Premier League points than any other side over the last five games, though the morale certainly looks low.
Injuries are partly to blame. No club has dealt with more major treatment table woes to start this season. It’s clearly affecting on-field performances.
There’s not one player who epitomises it more than Marcus Rashford. The Englishman contributed over 40 goals last season. Scoring and assisting when Manchester United needed him the most. His confidence was flowing and it was undoubtedly the happiest he has been since the early Ole Gunnar Solskjaer days.
This go around, he looks a shadow of his former self. I know he has some personal issues going on off the field, which is obviously not going to help. Now, Alan Shearer has weighed in on the situation.
The ex-Three Lions man has labelled the United star ‘moody’ at the moment, adding that the important Reds player ‘clearly looks very unhappy’ as things stand…
When asked about Rashford’s poor form, Shearer told Premier League Productions (per The Metro):
‘I think the simple answer is we don’t know because we’re not within the football club.’
‘But what we’re looking at is someone who clearly looks very unhappy.
‘He looks moody, and when that’s the case you’re never going to perform at your best.’
‘Whether he feels he’s better than what’s at Old Trafford at this moment in time, I don’t know. Whether he feels let down by recruitment because he went to another level in terms of his goals last year. The club haven’t gone to it this season which maybe he wanted or expected to.
‘You’re not seeing a happy footballer, you’re not seeing a happy person at this moment in time in Marcus Rashford. He looks a different player for England than he does for Manchester United.’
It’s tough to disagree. We all love Rashford, partly due to the fact that he is a fan just like us, while he also does so much good work off the field.
Right now, though, he has to just get back to basics. He’s obviously not lost his talent or ability, it’s just a confidence thing. Whether he needs to be taken out of the line-up for a game or two, to reignite that fire in his belly, or perhaps he just needs a goal to get things going again, Ten Hag has to find the solution soon.
Either way, United need to get Rashford happy and playing his best football again. He’s key to any success that this Red Devils side will have. His goals, assists, team-play and general skill are massive. He’s at the heart of everything good about United in the final third. It’s no surprise that his down-turn in form comes at the same time that United are struggling to score.
As much as I’d like to disagree with Shearer about anything. He’s spot on about Rashford…
