Man United have eyes on Nice defender, Jean-Clair Todibo.
Manchester United have not been anywhere close to their best defensively this season. They can partly blame injuries for that. Lisandro Martinez is out until 2024, while we’ve barely seen Luke Shaw. Tyrell Malacia we haven’t seen at all. That’s just the tip of the iceberg on the treatment table front.
Erik ten Hag is placing his faith in the injury-prone Raphael Varane, an ageing Jonny Evans and a Victor Lindelof/Harry Maguire combination that he doesn’t fully trust.
It’s no surprise, then, to see the Red Devils continuing to be linked with a new signing in that area of the field. The one name that keeps popping up is Jean-Clair Todibo.
You’d think it’s an easy link to make given Todibo plays for Nice, who are owned by the inbound Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Though these rumours have been popping up long before the SJR conversation even started.
The Sun have provided the latest on that front. They state that United ‘are considering’ a move to sign the 23-year-old defender. The gaffer wants a right-sided centre-back, presumably who can partner the aforementioned Martinez in the long term.
Apparently, the Old Trafford side made an approach for Todibo over the summer, but he didn’t want to make the wrong choice in his career, having established himself at Nice.
Ten Hag is said to be ‘keen’ on adding competition at the back, which does make sense given the way the current crop of players are performing.
There can be no doubt that Todibo would be a big upgrade. He also makes United a little younger at a position where they’re sneakily getting up there in age. He would not come cheaply, though. With money tight right now, this strikes me as a summer deal rather than a mid-season one.
