Man United have eyes on young RB Leipzig defender, Castello Lubeka.
Defensively, Manchester United have been a mess this season. There can be no getting away from that fact. The Red Devils haven’t coped well without Lisandro Martinez this term. While in the full-back positions, key injuries have played their part.
Suddenly, United are getting old in that position. Raphael Varane is consistently injured, while both Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are around the 30-mark. It makes sense, then, for the club to look to get younger in that position.
It’s Bild with the claim. They say United have eyes on RB Leipzig defender, Castello Lubeka. The 20-year-old only joined his current club this summer, leaving Lyon for the German Bundesliga.
According to their report, United are continuing to scout the 20-year-old centre-back, who was linked with a potential Old Trafford switch at the time of his move to Leipzig. In the end, the Reds decided not to bid for his signature.
However, the club is still seemingly keen on Lubeka, who, presumably, has made a positive start to life with Leipzig. His current deal runs until 2028, so he would not come cheaply.
This isn’t the first time United have missed out on the signing of an elite talent and I’m sure it will not be the last under the current regime. For far too long, the Reds have been guilty of getting away from what they know best, which is developing young players and honing their talents. Instead, they’ve favoured spending big bucks on ready-made players. It just hasn’t worked.
Lubeka is someone who would still go under the radar if signed in the not too distant future, though the transfer fee required will likely be fairly big. That alone could place increasing pressure on the young man if a deal were to happen.
