Man United have eyes on AS Roma centre-back, Gianluca Mancini.
Manchester United continue to be linked with a new centre-back signing ahead of the January transfer window. Whether funds would be available to facilitate that move in the mid-season period is another matter entirely. Either way, it does feel like the number one area of need at this point.
Jean-Clair Todibo’s name is the one that pops up most frequently. However, he’s not the only centre-back being linked with a Red Devils switch.
The latest claim comes from Il Romanista (via Sport Witness), they throw Gianluca Mancini into the mix as a potential option. According to the report, the 27-year-old defender has ‘entered the sights’ of Man United.
The AS Roma man has played every single Serie A game for Jose Mourinho so far this season, looking like a reliable, solid defender who’ll put his body on the line for the cause. That’s certainly something United could use more of at the moment…
The report claims that United are looking for a ‘reliable’ centre-back to help out Raphael Varane, whose form has been on the downturn for the last few months.
Mancini is viewed as a ‘welcome profile’ around Old Trafford, with a valuation of somewhere around the £18m mark at the moment. AS Roma will not sell him for that and would look to earn around £30m to let the Italian leave.
It’s understandable that Roma does not want to part with one of their prized assets and I’d be surprised if they sanctioned a deal in the mid-season window. This does feel like a move that’s more likely to happen in the summer.
Either way, United are desperate for a new centre-back of some description, preferably sooner rather than later.
