Players receiving bans because of accumulated yellow cards or indeed the instant suspension following a red are always going to face criticism, especially when the club faces a spell without the key players’ services and with no suitable replacement. West Ham themselves have fallen foul of this in the Carling Cup this season with one player shown a red card after a second reckless challenge.
This followed on from Edson Alvarez’ reported ‘threat to kill’ Enzo Fernandez – picked up and reported in South America after the clash with Chelsea. Clearly this was in the heat of a game but a worrying pointer as to “El Machin’s”state of mind.
Alvarez returns to London Stadium now after the latest international break with a new cloud hanging over his head having earning himself another stupid yellow card for fighting in the Mexico V USA match. It was by all accounts a pretty brainless act when his team were 2-0 ahead, slapping an opponent and throwing him to the ground.
I’m sure Alvarez will be embarrassed by the incident but it presents a growing concern for Lopetegui about the state of mind of his midfield lieutenant. Alvarez’ received ten yellow cards in the Premier League last year: With the latest lapse in judgement there must be concerns that he is a liability.
His coach has to find a way to channel his aggression and ability whilst prompting him to act with a greater maturity when his club need him playing with a clear head. As reported in FoxSportsMexico, Lopetegui said about managing Alvarez’ poor disciplinary record: “I think that in that adaptation too, in that energy, he has to be able to manage it in the best possible way, and for it to be an energy that helps and makes him become a better and better footballer.”
“We are also working on it, and he is aware of that circumstance, and every time I’m sure he’s going to be a better player and help us more, without any doubt.”
Lopetegui has already dropped the Mexican once from the starting line up: Perhaps another spell on the bench beckons?
