Florian Plettenberg has been busy with his West Ham updates over the past 24 hours.
Earlier today, we reported on a post from the Sky Germany journalist suggesting that the Hammers might be eyeing potential replacements for Julen Lopetegui. However, it was his update on Niclas Füllkrug yesterday that I found most intriguing. Plettenberg subtly implied that the German striker could leave West Ham.
The social media post was dressed up as a fitness update, but the implication was clear: a departure for Füllkrug might be on the cards.
Plettenberg’s language was intriguing, to say the least. His choice of terms like “as of now” and “currently” seemed strategically placed, but his denial of a story that hadn’t surfaced was quite revealing.
The Sky man wrote: “Niclas Füllkrug is continuing to work hard on his comeback for West Ham United. His Achilles tendon injury is persistent, but he is expected to return to the pitch in the coming days and should be back in the squad after the international break.”
Plettenberg then got to the juicier part, saying, “As of now, Füllkrug isn’t considering a departure in winter. West Ham also don’t want to let the 31-year-old leave and believe in the German striker. A sale is currently not on the table.”
It doesn’t take an Enigma encryption device to read between the lines of that message, which will not fill anyone with confidence that Füllkrug will be at West Ham for any significant length of time.
