Claret & Hugh Exclusive
West Ham’s top source has decided to put the record straight on rumours that the Hammers had agreed personal terms with Ruben Amorim.
In a surprising twist, TalkSport’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook reported earlier that Amorim, now bound for Manchester United, came incredibly close to joining West Ham United.
Though many Hammers fans already knew the Sporting Lisbon coach travelled to London for talks, they may have been shocked to hear Talk Sport report that personal terms were agreed upon. Amorim was reportedly identified by Irons’ director of football Tim Steidten and was pictured arriving in London on a private jet.
Crook claims that, despite reaching a verbal agreement, West Ham’s chairman David Sullivan hesitated to pay the €10 million compensation to Sporting, leading Amorim to return to Portugal. Consequently, Julen Lopetegui, who was out of work at the time, took over as West Ham’s manager.
However, a top West Ham source has denied the story by Talk Sport in the last hour by stating the report is “Not True”.
Claret & Hugh went to the very top of the club to find out if there were any truth in the rumours of an agreement breaking down. However, the club insider has suggested that there was never any agreement between both parties.
Out top man at West Ham went on to say; “He [Amorim] could be an amazing manager, but he’s only done it with one club in his own country. We all thought he was a big risk Also, the £10m compensation was a factor.
Time will tell if we made a good or a bad decision”.
