Vincent Kompany’s tenure at Bayern Munich so far has seen its fair share of highs and lows. Dayot Upamecano’s time in Munich has been the same, although with far more lows than highs. Upamecano was once one of the most touted young center-backs in the world during his time at RB Leipzig, but has never hit his ceiling since. Regardless of that, it is reported that Upamecano is still Kompany’s preferred center-back.
It is difficult to say how long Kompany will stay with Bayern, but based on the club’s recent track record with managers, patience doesn’t last long. If Kompany’s project does work out though, there’s a high chance the Frenchman will extend beyond 2026.
Dayot Upamecano is Vincent Kompany’s absolute preferred centre-back in the pecking order. If the Belgian’s project in Munich ends up being a success, there’s a high probability Upamecano will extend his contract with Bayern beyond 2026 [@BILD] pic.twitter.com/ZT23URZfzg

With names like Hummels, Boateng, De Ligt, and Alaba in recent years, it is a harsh sight to see Upamecano become Bayern’s #1 CB. However, Upamecano is by no years beyond a defender’s prime and has plenty of time to fix his current trajectory. Perhaps a strong belief in his abilities is just what he needs.
Many will say Upamecano has already been given more than enough support based on his performances but like it or not, the Frenchman might be here to stay.
