Bayern Munich enjoyed a smashing 4-0 victory over Mainz 05 on the road this week in the DFB-Pokal, although one recurring nemesis was not on the sidelines this time: head coach Bo Svensson, who beat the Bavarians three times in his tenure there from 2021-23.
Svensson is back this weekend though, as the former Mainz boss has now taken the reigns at Union Berlin — who travel to Munich for this Saturday’s Bundesliga clash.
How about that Midas touch when it comes to the Bavarians, Bo?
“It takes a mixture of many things,” Svensson explained in match preview comments captured by Bild (via @iMiaSanMia). “That was always the case when we beat Bayern. You need the right course of the game, luck in a few situations and you have to have a top day yourself. Some things are in your own hands, some aren’t. Against an opponent with so much quality, a lot has to go right to get a result.
“Bayern have brutal quality. There’s also a tactical development that is impressive. Every player can make the difference. We have to get to our maximum level.”
It’s nice to see a nod to the work of first-year Bayern coach Vincent Kompany, whose tactics have been under scrutiny since a recent fallow period culminated in a 4-1 collapse at FC Barcelona in the Champions League.
Will Bayern keep up its Bundesliga dominance against Union, or does Svensson have another giant-slaying trick up his sleeve?
