Edson Alvarez was handed a second yellow card and a subsequent red card for a reckless challenge during West Ham United’s 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
He let everyone down with his stupidity, and some West Ham fans are now suggesting that Edson Alvarez should be sold.
It was only last month when Julen Lopetegui told reporters that he has spoken to Alvarez about the need to tame his aggression on the pitch.
The 27-year-old has proven to be a complete liability for West Ham this season.
Despite his obvious strengths, his flaws have become impossible to ignore.
It seems to me like his actions have been borne from a lack of respect for Lopetegui, but it’s the Hammers fans who are being hurt the most.
His teammates will not have appreciated Alvarez’s reckless decision-making either…
What West Ham players did to Edson Alvarez after red card
The 3-0 defeat up at the City Ground on Saturday was a chastening experience for everyone involved with the Hammers.
Despite our 2-1 win over Manchester United the previous weekend, the West Ham fans knew that it was a lucky result.
We hadn’t turned a corner, it was more a case of fate being on our side, and so that proved up in the East Midlands four days ago.
The Alvarez sending off summed up our afternoon, and now a report has claimed that certain Hammers players weren’t happy with their teammate one little bit.
According to a report from The Athletic, Luis Guilherme, Aaron Cresswell and Danny Ings crossed paths with Alvarez after he left the pitch following his red card.
And all three players apparently didn’t even acknowledge the Mexico international.
That doesn’t bode well does it, certainly not from a team morale standpoint.
Something doesn’t seem quite right at the London Stadium right now, with tensions threatening to boil over behind the scenes.
This season has the makings of a disastrous one unless big changes are made now.
And by that I mean players like Alvarez needed to be banished from the team, if Lopetegui is to remain in charge.
Ideally, David Sullivan would sack Lopetegui before the international break and replace him with someone like Thomas Frank or Sebastien Hoeness.
However, I just can’t see that happening right now, so the Spaniard has to ensure he selects players who will give their all for West Ham, and Edson Alvarez has proven that he doesn’t fit into that category.
