In one of the most controversial missed calls in recent history, Marc Cucurella blocked an attempt on net with his hand, in extra time of the Germany vs Spain quarter-final at Euro 2024. A penalty that should have been given would have almost certainly sent Germany through to the semifinals, and would have then been the clear favorite to win the tournament. Of course, life isn’t always fair.
Julian Nagelsmann recently chimed in on Cucurella admitting the handball and missed call. The Germany coach went on to praise himself for his calmness in the situation. Causing a fight rarely helps the situation so it was better to focus on the rest of the game, despite the end result of the match.
“I have to praise myself for how calm I remained in that situation. That’s very uncharacteristic of me. Now I’m not thinking too much about it because I can’t influence it anymore. To this day I don’t understand why the ref didn’t look at it again,” said Nagelsmann (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Nagelsmann went on to show his maturity by stating that he is no longer thinking about it. Most German fans have not yet moved on, as it has already left a large scar knowing how special a home tournament victory would have been. Perhaps it is putting fuel in the fire for a successful World Cup campaign.
