West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan has played his hand extremely well with Julen Lopetegui as far as I’m concerned.
David Sullivan brought Julen Lopetegui to the London Stadium in the summer to replace David Moyes in the West Ham hot-seat.
As things stand though, David Sullivan is said to be extremely underwhelmed by Julen Lopetegui and the job the Hammers head coach has done so far.
It’s little wonder as to why, with the Hammers languishing down in 14th spot in the Premier League table, having taken just 12 points from our opening 11 games.
The football has been dire to watch and Lopetegui seems bereft of ideas of how to turn things around.
The Spaniard’s summer signings are failing to gel together, and he clearly still doesn’t know his best team.
There are extenuating circumstances of course – the tough fixtures we’ve faced and injuries to key players.
However, there really is no excuse for some of the performances that we’ve served up this season.
The question is, how much longer will Lopetegui be given to turn things around?
Julen Lopetegui led to the slaughter by David Sullivan
I personally think that the Hammers majority shareholder may well have a specific plan in place, and it would explain why Lopetegui hasn’t already been sacked.
There are plenty of top-class managers currently out of work who could come in and improve on what the former Wolves boss has served up so far.
I’m sure this is how things will pan out over the next few weeks…
West Ham face extremely difficult fixtures against Newcastle United and Arsenal immediately after the international break.
I actually suggested right here on Hammers News earlier this week that appointing a new manager with those two games lying in wait would be madness.
And I believe that David Sullivan is thinking along similar lines.
Lopetegui is like a lamb being led to the slaughter for the clashes with the Magpies and the Gunners.
Two heavy defeats in those games would surely see the 58-year-old moved on from the London Stadium.
I actually agree with the decision not to sack Lopetegui yet. The Hammers have a run of really winnable fixtures starting on December 3rd.
The ideal time to make a managerial change will be after the Newcastle and Arsenal matches, if we lose them both of course.
Julen Lopetegui is clearly on very thin ice, and the Newcastle and Arsenal games could be the tipping point, with David Sullivan ready and waiting to yield the axe.
