Former Bayern Munich and German national team star Stefan Effenberg hit on the topic of Bayern Munich’s pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz and the news that Die Werkself might have convinced the Germany international to extend his deal for another season (via his column for Sport1):
Florian Wirtz ‘s retention was particularly important. He is simply the difference maker and has this technical perfection that sets him apart so much. He is creative, has the necessary ease and has the quality to outplay two or three players. That is outstanding and in that form perhaps only Jamal Musiala can do it.
Both would certainly make a good impression at FC Bayern. The fact that the two work well together is already evident in the national team. Nevertheless, I would advise Florian Wirtz to stay in Leverkusen. At the moment, he has everything he needs in Leverkusen and every opportunity to become champion again.
Given the advice from his father, I am also sure that he is making the sensible decision to continue to develop in Leverkusen. Even if Xabi Alonso leaves, this should not change anything, because Wirtz has the necessary quality regardless of the coach.
But a move abroad or to FC Bayern will certainly happen at some point when the time is right. It is also clear that some things will change at FC Bayern in the next few years.
It is really starting to look like Wirtz could be just the kind of jolt that Bayern Munich needs to upgrade its attack, but also that the Bavarians might not be able to make that splurge until 2026.
If so, the waiting will truly be the hardest part.
