The recent injury crisis at Bayern Munich has certainly caused multiple headaches for head coach Vincent Kompany, who could only watch in horror as his team continued to suffer injuries. But every cloud has its silver lining, and as it so always happens with injury crises, it came with the chance for young players to experience the wonders of first team football at Bayern.
Nestory Irankunda was one of those young beneficiaries, and his experience was all the more special because he was chosen to be in the squad for a Champions League night — when Bayern faced off against Shakhtar Donetsk. “It was a dream come true. I would’ve loved to come on,” the Australian admitted via @iMiaSanMia, having watched the full 90 minutes from the bench. “Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to come on — but still, the atmosphere, the moment, the emotions, it’s unreal.”
It was a taste of the brilliance of the Champions League, one the former Adelaide United player will not soon forget. And it was a reminder to keep working hard to eventually earn the chance to walk onto the field while the iconic Champions League music plays and the fans roar.
