Tottenham will have to make do without No.1 Guglielmo Vicario until late February
Ange Postecoglou has come under pressure following Tottenham Hotspur’s heavy defeat to Liverpool at home on Sunday.
The North Londoners have several key players sidelined at the moment and injury problems doesn’t look like easing up. One of those is Spurs No.1 Guglielmo Vicario.
Guglielmo Vicario suffered an ankle fracture during Spurs’ 4-0 rout of Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League in November. He went under the knife and has been subsequently ruled out for months. The Italy international is not expected to return until late February, which means Ange Postecoglou has to make do without his first-choice goalkeeper for more than two months from now.

The 28-year-old glovesman has been a key part of the Tottenham backline since he arrived at N17 from Empoli in June 2023. He is not just an excellent shot-stopper but also crucial to the way Ange Postecoglou’s side play out from the back, given his composure and ability with the ball at his feet. Fraser Forster has deputised in Vicario’s injury absence in recent games.
Forster has performed well, pulling off a few unbelievable saves to keep Spurs alive in certain games at times. However, the veteran shot-stopper has made a few blatant mistakes recently, and his struggles while playing out from the back and distribution skills have led to panic stations in the team. The recent examples have been in games against Manchester United and Liverpool.
Postecoglou has already played down chances of signing a goalkeeper in the January transfer window, regardless of Forster’s shaky displays against Man United and Liverpool. And transfer news guru Fabrizio Romano was asked about Spurs’ plans to sign a new goalkeeper in January, to which he claimed that Big Ange is set to stick with Forster.
“No, I can guarantee he’s being honest,” Fabrizio Romano said on the Men in Blazers podcast when asked if the Spurs boss’ recent praise for Forster was honest or if he was just trying to boost his veteran goalkeeper’s confidence.
“To be fair, I was also asking the same question to my sources because I had the same doubts, but I’m told he’s being honest.
“I think Tottenham will not sign a goalkeeper in the January transfer window. That’s what I’m told.”

Tottenham have been linked with some goalkeepers in recent weeks. Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson and James Trafford of Burnley have emerged as potential options to replace Forster as the club’s No.1 for the interim until Vicario returns.
