West Ham United have a lot of work to do in the upcoming January transfer window.
Julen Lopetegui has some seriously important items on his January transfer window agenda at West Ham.
Lopetegui’s job is said to be safe for now at least, and if he is to guide us to a successful campaign, he needs to make two or three top quality signings this winter.
The summer transfer business at the London Stadium doesn’t look as good now as it did at the time.
The Hammers need more youth, energy, power and pace in the team.
There is one position in particular where we’re particularly short right now, and a big update has emerged regarding the club’s stance on making a splash in the transfer market.
New West Ham January transfer window claim is negligent
As far as I’m concerned, the Hammers are at least three players short of having a squad capable of challenging for honours on all fronts.
We all know that we need a new striker and a powerful, ball-carrying central midfielder.
But what about a centre-back as well?
One of David Sullivan’s chief confidants has just provided a big transfer update.
According to Claret and Hugh, West Ham will not be signing a centre-back in the January window.
If that is indeed true, I just find that utterly bizarre.
Max Kilman suffered a serious looking injury during our win over Southampton on Boxing Day, and he will likely be out for quite some time.
So that leaves Lopetegui with only Konstantinos Mavropanos, Jean-Clair Todibo and youngster Kaelan Casey as central defensive options.
Aaron Cresswell can play on the left side of a back three at a push, whilst Edson Alvarez can drop back into the heart of defence if need be, but we really are stretched to say the least.
What happens if either Mavropanos or Todibo suffer an injury?
We are lacking any kind of strength in depth in the centre-back department, and West Ham should be going all out to sign a new defender in the January transfer window in my opinion.
Failing to sign a new centre-back will be dangerously negligent.
