Jarrod Bowen has been brilliant for West Ham United over the past five years.
However, he hasn’t escaped criticism from some sections of the West Ham fanbase this season.
The Hammers signed Jarrod Bowen from Hull City in January 2020 for around £20 million – an unbelievably good deal for us.
He has bagged 66 goals and 43 assist in 222 appearances in all competitions for West Ham.
Bowen is a hugely important player for the Hammers, but is he captain material?
The 27-year-old is incredibly quiet on the field, and it is rare to see him getting in the referee’s ear.
Bowen failed to come out and speak to the fans after a few of our heavy defeats earlier on this season, most notably after the loss at Tottenham in October.
Meanwhile, The Athletic suggested recently that England international does not possess the attributes of a stereotypical leader.
In spite of that, I have to say that he is slowly growing into the role this season.
I’ve noticed him take on more responsibility both on and off the pitch over the past couple of months.
West Ham ace insists Jarrod Bowen accusations are unfounded
Aaron Cresswell has been raving about the Hammers club captain.
The 34-year-old left-back is the West Ham vice-captain, and he has been hugely impressed by the club’s skipper.
When speaking to WHUFC.com, Cresswell proved that any suggestions about Bowen’s lack of leadership skills are completely unfounded:
“He’s our leader, he’s our captain,” the defender said. “He’s been fantastic. I think it’s five years he’s been here now. He never shies away from anything, is always up for the challenge and stands up to everything. He’s been fantastic and long may that continue.”
Well, those comments from Cress clearly show just how much of a leader Bowen actually is.
As mentioned earlier, I wasn’t convinced by the 28-year-old captain credentials when he was handed the armband by Julen Lopetegui.
However, he’s slowly starting to prove me wrong.
Jarrod Bowen will go on to become a West Ham legend one day, I have no doubts about that.
And he is slowly starting to prove that he very much deserves to be captain of this great football club.
