Tottenham Hotspur not ruling out January deal for Johnny Cardoso
Tottenham Hotspur sold Giovani Lo Celso to Real Betis in the summer and as part of the Argentine international’s sale to the La Liga side, they reached an agreement that would allow them to sign Johnny Cardoso for a £25 million transfer fee next summer. His signing remains very much on the card in spite of fierce rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid reportedly entering the race to sign him.
According to The Athletic, Spurs are planning on beating competition for Cardoso’s services by attempting his signing in January itself. Their clause of purchasing him for £25 million is unlikely to be available to them in the winter but even if they were to pay a few million pounds more for the American international, he would be a handy arrival.
Cardoso has been one of the most budding players in La Liga over the recent past and Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in him shows they are incredibly keen on him and see him as a long-term option. However, it is debatable whether or not he is their need of the hour and if bringing forward his signing to January is the correct decision, all while paying more than the pre-agreement states.
The engine room has been far from a problem for Ange Postecoglou with most of his key names being fit and available, barring Rodrigo Bentancur, who was suspended for seven domestic matches. Dejan Kulusevski’s emergence as a midfield option has also worked superbly in the Premier League side’s favour and will hold them in good stead for the remainder of the campaign too.

It will be interesting to see what signings Tottenham are planning on making in January but it would be reasonable of Postecoglou to expect at least one defender and one forward, if not a goalkeeper too.
