Sergio Reguilon is out of contract at Tottenham Hotspur in June
Sergio Reguilon was a Europa League winner five years ago with Sevilla, a highly regarded left-back at the time. Currently, the Spaniard finds his Tottenham Hotspur career at a crossroads.
The 28-year-old found himself frozen out of Ange Postecoglou’s squad until the start of December. A defensive injury crisis has forced Ange Postecoglou to bring the left-back back into the scheme of things. Since being included in the squad recently, he has made two appearances.
Sergio Reguilon came on as a substitute in the stoppage time of Spurs’ 4-3 win over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals before making his first Premier League appearance of the season in the 2-2 draw with Wolves last weekend. He replaced Destiny Udogie in the first half of the game, after the Italian was forced off with a hamstring injury.

The six-cap Spanish international, who has been heavily linked with a move to Fenerbahce to reunite with former boss Jose Mourinho, has entered the final six months of his contract (Transfermarkt) at the Hotspur Way. It is difficult to see Tottenham extend his contract, but following Udogie’s injury, a January exit for Reguilon could be blocked.
Ange Postecoglou was facing the media on Friday afternoon ahead of Spurs’ home game against Newcastle United. When asked to address Reguilon’s situation at the club amid the injury crisis, he stated (h/t Football London):
“Well, you know, he played last week and yeah it just depends on the situation. He’s been available all year but obviously at the moment we’ve got, you know it’s no secret, we’ve got quite a lot of our defenders out and obviously we lost Destiny now for a period of time. It’s going to be a while, so yeah, Reggy, I’m sure will get more opportunities.”
Big Ange has seen the majority of his defenders suffer injury problems, with Udogie the latest casualty. He is set to spend more than six weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Reguilon, who has been recently touted with a return to Brentford where he spent the second half of last season on loan, looked to have no future in North London prior to Udogie’s injury setback. With Ben Davies also sidelined, Reguilon is now expected to get more opportunities to feature for Big Ange’s side.

Tottenham are weighing up a move for Lecce’s highly-rated left-back Patrick Dorgu this month. However, there is no guarantee at this moment of a deal for Dorgu getting done, and if Spurs do fail to bring in a new left-back, Reguilon will be one of the few options Big Ange will be left with. Thus, while a January exit has been speculated, it seems as though the Spurs boss cannot allow the Spaniard to leave White Hart Lane now.
