The holiday season is officially over, and the Bayern Munich squad has returned to Sabener Straße to begin preparations for the rest of the season. After a few friendly matches, their first order of business lies in the form of a Bundesliga visit to Borussia Mönchengladbach on January 11th.
With the start of the new year has come the opening of the winter transfer window, for which is has already been stated that Bayern will be focusing on contract negotiations for key players rather than incoming business. This sentiment has been hammered home by both board member for sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund. The club did, however, just announce that youngster Frans Krätzig will be staying with Heidenheim on loan for the remainder of the season.
As far as contracts are concerned, the key players that are currently being negotiated with are Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, and Alphonso Davies — all of their current contracts are set to expire this summer. The same is the case for winger Leroy Sané, but his situation is a bit different from the other three players and it is expected that Manuel Neuer will also be getting a one-year contract extension along with Sven Ulreich.
For the key three players, Eberl knows that Bayern is entering crunch time with getting new deals over the line. “The holiday was relaxed, but of course we still had a few conversations. Now it’s decision time. Christoph and I have already done a lot of ‘preparatory work’. But now the talks about whether to reach an agreement or not are entering the decisive phase,” he recently explained to SID Sports News (via @iMiaSanMia).
Quite arguably, other than the summer transfer window, this is the most pressing task Eberl has had on his hands ever since he stepped into his role t Bayern midway through last season after being let go by RB Leipzig. Keeping all of Musiala, Kimmich and Davies is integral to the long-term success of Bayern and getting their deals over the line will help give Vincent Kompany and the rest of the squad ever bit of added confidence as they keep pushing for two pieces of silverware for this season.
