Matheus Cunha, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ in-form forward, has emerged as a primary target for Arsenal as they seek to strengthen their attack in the January transfer window.
With Bukayo Saka sidelined by a hamstring injury, Mikel Arteta is exploring options to strengthen his squad, but Wolves are determined to retain the services of their talismanic striker.
Cunha, 25, has enjoyed a standout season, scoring 10 Premier League goals and providing four assists.
His impact has been vital for Wolves, who are currently fighting to stave off relegation under newly appointed manager Vitor Pereira.
The Brazilian’s importance to the team is underscored by Wolves’ willingness to offer him an improved contract, which may include a release clause to ward off suitors like Arsenal.
Arteta hinted at Arsenal’s approach during his pre-Brighton press conference, stating: “If something extraordinary is on the market that we can afford, and we think they will have a real impact on the team, we have to be open for that possibility.”
However, securing Cunha’s signature will not come cheaply.
Wolves have reportedly placed a valuation of £45 million on the player, and any new contract agreement would likely raise that price further. Arsenal must decide whether Cunha’s dynamic playmaking abilities and finishing prowess justify such a significant investment in January.
Arsenal’s interest comes amid Wolves’ precarious position in the league. Despite their struggles, Pereira has revitalized the team since his arrival, making Cunha an indispensable figure in their bid for survival. The Brazilian’s numbers—26 goals and 12 assists in 76 appearances for Wolves—highlight his influence on the pitch.
For Wolves, tying Cunha to a new deal is a top priority. Such an agreement would not only solidify their attacking options but also potentially inflate his future transfer value, giving them leverage in any negotiations.
If Arsenal are to pry him away from Molineux, they will likely need to pay top dollar, a decision that underscores the premium placed on Premier League talent, especially mid-season.
Cunha is currently serving a two-game ban and facing an £80,000 fine for an altercation with Ipswich Town staff during a December Premier League match.
Despite this, Pereira has backed his forward, stating: “We need to be ready with or without Cunha and play as a team. He knows it wasn’t a good reaction, but I look for not only a player but a human being, and sometimes even I make mistakes.”
Wolves play Nottingham Forest on Monday night.
