Bayern Munich did not get any major contract work done before the Christmas break, meaning progress will now have to be made concurrent with the return of the competitive fixture schedule.
Executive board member for sport Max Eberl weighed in recently on the club’s top contract situations.
“I never spoke of an ultimatum,” Eberl clarified in remarks captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I never said they have to think over Christmas and then say yes or no. We’ll continue to talk with the players and their agents in peace – and of course at some point we must have a decision.”
BFW Analysis
For a club that has appeared publicly rattled by the number of high-profile free transfer departures in years past — from David Alaba to Niklas Süle — the new sporting regime in Bavaria is keeping its nerve.
Christoph Freund and Max Eberl have let numerous contracts tick into the last six months — leaving the future of star players, some on very big contracts, completely open, and the topic of whether or not Bayern even wants to keep some of these players dangling in the air.
Will it pay off? It seems to be so far, as everyone from Alphonso Davies to Joshua Kimmich seems to be showing interest in renewing, while Bayern appears to have at least some leverage over the contract situation. And getting that burgeoning wage bill under control is a priority for Bayern as well — meaning they just might be okay with letting a few stars walk.
