New West Ham United head coach Graham Potter is clearly desperate to bolster one area of his squad in particular.
Despite telling reporters that addressing the defensive issues at the club is his main priority, Graham Potter is obviously looking at strengthening West Ham‘s weaknesses in central midfield as well.
Since Declan Rice left to join Arsenal in the summer of 2023, the Hammers have desperately lacked any kind of power or pace in the middle of the park.
The fact that a ball-carrying central midfielder with real athleticism hasn’t been signed over the past three transfer windows is utterly farcial.
In fact, it’s bordering on gross negligence.
However, it’s onwards and upwards for us now.
Potter seems to be ready to address the failings of David Moyes and Julen Lopetegui before him.
Graham Potter wants PL midfielder as first West Ham signing
Potter is in desperate need of a couple of top-class signings this month.
The squad at his disposal right now is an extremely unbalanced one.
And Potter apparently has a plan in mind to address one of our key problem areas.
According to a report from Ekstra Bladet, the Hammers are attempting to hijack Napoli’s move to sign Philip Billing from Bournemouth this month.
Now, Billing is not the most technically gifted midfielder, but Potter will surely be looking to play the likes of Lucas Paqueta and Carlos Soler in and around him in order to get his possession-based system to work.
The 28-year-old Bournemouth midfielder is and absolute powerhouse. He has energy and athleticism in abundance, and would add some much-needed physicality to our engine room.
Standing at 6ft 6in tall, Billing can be extremely useful in the air, both defensively and inside the final third.
The Denmark international has bagged 31 goals and 20 assists in 201 games for Bournemouth. 51 goal contributions from 201 games is a very decent return.
Especially when taking into account the fact that Tomas Soucek has just 48 for the Hammers in 26 more games than the Bournemouth midfielder.
I actually think that Graham Potter bringing Philip Billing to West Ham in the January window would be a smart move.
