With the January transfer window now open, Paris Saint-Germain have a chance to part ways with players who no longer fit into their plans. Marco Asensio appears to be one such player.
Since November 30, the former Real Madrid star has been gradually sidelined, losing his place in the starting lineup and barely featuring as a substitute. His only minutes since then came on December 6, when he played just 11 minutes against AJ Auxerre.
Asensio stayed on the bench for three of PSG’s last four Ligue 1 matches in 2024 and wasn’t included in the squad for the Coupe de France Round of 64 clash against RC Lens.
He was also on the bench for the Trophée des Champions against AS Monaco but didn’t see any minutes. These developments strongly suggest that an exit could be on the horizon.
Are Aston Villa a serious suitor for Marco Asensio?
According to RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins, Aston Villa are not monitoring Asensio as a possible target for the January transfer window. While discussions haven’t focused on a direct swap involving Asensio and Jhon Durán, the shared interest between the clubs could help PSG secure Durán for a lower fee.

Last month, a report claimed that Asensio is considering whether to stay at PSG until the summer or make a move this winter. He has reportedly attracted interest from clubs like Bayer Leverkusen, Inter Milan, Lyon, Aston Villa, Newcastle, MLS, and teams in Asia.
The 28-year-old has appeared in 46 matches across all competitions for PSG since joining the Ligue 1 side in 2023, scoring seven goals and recording 11 assists. Transfermarkt puts the attacking players’ transfer value at €20 million.
