Controversy and adversity has followed Leroy Sané throughout his career. As a teenager, he made a name for himself at Schalke. His critics will say he sold out with a €52M transfer to Manchester City, where he responded with double digit goals in back-to-back Premier League winning seasons. Despite tearing his ACL in 2019, Bayern Munich was still willing to pay €49M for his services in 2020.
Year over year, Sané has consistently produced at Bayern as well:
- 2020/21: 2,525 minutes, 10 goals, 9 assists
- 2021/22: 2,970 minutes, 14 goals, 15 assists
- 2022/23: 2,763 minutes, 14 goals, 9 assists
- 2023/24: 3,215 minutes, 10 goals, 12 assists
- 2024/25: 1,060 minutes, 7 goals, 1 assist
The main criticism has been his unpredictable performances from match to match. But if you ask Max Eberl, Sané’s potential was on full display against Hoffenheim.
“The way he presented himself is exactly how we need Leroy to be. He has great quality,” Max Eberl told Florian Plettenberg (via @iMiaSanMia). “He has incredibly high quality, and he knows that himself. If he performs like he did against Hoffenheim, then he’s definitely a player who is an option for Bayern Munich.”
On whether Sané has a future at Bayern, Eberl added, “We never said he doesn’t.”
Sané’s contract expires this summer, and there has been much debate on whether he warrants an extension. The most likely outcome is a one or two year extension at a reduced wage. But with six months remaining, everything is on the table.
