Bayern Munich closed off the first half of the season with a bang. The total domination of TSG Hoffenheim was a fantastic way to return to full form after the winter break. The 5-0 scoreline reflected a perfect day in the office, both in attack and defence.
In a post-match interview with ESPN’s @archiert1 (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich defender and birthday boy Eric Dier gave his thoughts on the game. He said “A lovely evening. To sum up the performance, it was very professional”.
With only seven touches in the opposition box compared to Bayern’s 49, and only managing to make 45 passes in the final third compared to Bayern’s 224 the visitors were totally starved of any breathing space every time they won the ball. Opening up about the hunger in the squad to recover the ball immediately after losing it, Dier gave credit to the team’s preparation and attitude. He said, “We are tactically very well drilled in this aspect. Obviously, we are showing a great attitude and a hunger to recover the ball.”
Dier emphasized the importance of playing as a unit to succeed with a high risk and high energy pressing style. “We’re doing it as a team in every phase of our defensive play. The effort from everybody is incredible and it’s only because of that, that we can have that success” he added.
