Denis Law died on Friday the 17th of January, at the age of 84. He is known as a fantastic striker and goalscorer especially for Manchester United. We have taken a look back on his career with Leicester eyes, as his goalscoring record is 100%. He scored 15 goals in 15 official games, 8 on Gordon Banks, 7 on Peter Shilton.
Law first made his name in football as a teenager brought down from his hometown Aberdeen to join Huddersfield. His debut at Huddersfield came as early as December 1956, at the age of 16. The manager in charge, Bill Shankly.
He was a player noticed by the top clubs and in March 1960 Man City paid £55.000 for his services. Man City were struggling at the time, as they just 14 days earlier, had been battered 5-0 by Leicester at Filbert Street.
Man City avoided relegation and Denis Law’s first game vs. Leicester, came in the next season, 1960/61. Law was in the line-up for the home game vs. Leicester on the 15th of October, coming out as 3-1 winners, but he was not among the goalscorers. He was also goalless in his next game vs. Leicester, away at Filbert Street on the 26th of April 1961. Man City winning 2-1 on the day.
He was in the summer of 1961 sold to Italian club Torino, for a fee of £110.000. His stay in Italy was shortlived as he a year later returns to England and Man Utd, this time for a fee of £115.000.

In his first season for Man Utd he faced Leicester in three games. In the first, at Old Trafford on the 15th of April 1963, being in the side, but not on the scoresheet, the game ended 2-2. The are strangely enough playing Leicester again the day after on the 16th of April. This time at Filbert Street, Law scores his first three goals on Gordon Banks, but still ends on the losing side, Leicester winning 4-3.
Then the two clubs meet again, this time in the FA Cup final on the 25th of May 1963. Law opens the scoring with his goal after 30 minutes. Man Utd winning the final at Wembley 3-1. Law then miss the next match in the league, but makes the trip to Leicester on the 8th of February 1964, scores one goal in that game, but again ending on the losing side as Leicester comes out 3-2 winners. Law scores again in the next on the 29th of August 1964, this time the game ends in a 2-2 draw.
Law scores his next in a game at Filbert Street on the 30th December 1966, being able to win at Filbert Street, winning 2-1 on the day as the other goal was scored by a certain George Best. A new win in the next one on the 18th March 1967, Law scoring one in 5-2 win at Old Trafford. On the 26th of August 1967, Man Utd play Leicester at Old Trafford, Denis Law is in the team, but do not score, as it all ends in a 1-1 draw. On the 23rd of December 1967, Law is again back on the scoresheet in a 2-2 draw at Filbert Street. This was the first goal scored on Peter Shilton, the previous 8 all being scored on Gordon Banks.
On the 7th of December 1968, Law scores again on Peter Shilton, but his single goal is not enough, Leicester are 2-1 winners on the day. Law also makes the scoresheet in the other game that season. On the 17th of May 1969, Man Utd wins 3-2 at Old Trafford. Law scores two on the 20th of November 1971, Man Utd ending 3-2 winners, in this first game for Leicester back in the top tier. Law is not involved in the next one as this game at November 1971 becomes his last for Man Utd vs. Leicester. Law only makes 11 league appearances in the 1972-73 season, his last at Old Trafford, and is not in the line-up for two fixtures vs. Leicester.
Denis Law returned to Man City in 1973, missing the first fixture vs. Leicester. Then on the 12th of January being in the team and scoring as Man City comes out 2-0 winners. This was Law’s last and final goal vs. Leicester, and the 7th on Peter Shilton.
Counting it all up he scored 15 goals in 15 appearances, ending on the winning side on 8 occasions, having 4 draws and involved in 3 defeats. For Scotland, he was playing in several teams alongside Frank McLintock and Dave Gibson. He also scored for Scotland vs. England on 3 occasions.
His life in football was a fantastic story. Sad to see another great footballer of the past leaving us and moving on.
