West Ham United have a lot to learn from Nottingham Forest, after their latest statement of intent in the January window.
Both West Ham and Nottingham Forest are expected to be very busy in the January transfer window, but for very different reasons.
Whilst Nuno Espirito Santo and his Forest team are pushing to finish inside the top four, Graham Potter has a real task on his hands to get his Hammers side back inside the top 10.
Potter replaced Julen Lopetegui as the new West Ham head coach two weeks ago, and it has immediately become clear how much damage the Spaniard caused during his reign at the London Stadium.
The need for some quality new signings at West Ham is clear to see, but as things stand, there has only be one outgoing – Maxwel Cornet leaving to join Genoa on loan.
When Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville return to action, I expect to see an instant improvement from the Hammers.
However, there is absolutely no way that Potter can afford to exit the January window without having strengthened his ranks.
Unfortunately for us, it seems like it could be a frustrating final nine days in January, whilst Forest are out there making some seriously exciting moves.
Forest show West Ham how it’s done in the January window
Who would have thought at the start of the season that Forest would be sitting 11 places and 18 points ahead of the Hammers in the Premier League table in late January?
Certainly not me!
It shows what can happen when you have a supremely ambitious ownership team at the helm.
And now Forest are showing the Hammers how it’s done.
That’s because the Tricky Trees are said to be lining up a blockbuster move to sign Wolves attacker Matheus Cunha this winter, according to a report from The Daily Mail.
The sensational 25-year-old Wolves forward is said to be valued at a whopping £80 million by the Black Country outfit (Ben Jacobs).
And if Forest end up signing the Brazilian, it will be a serious statement of intent from them.
It’s the kind of signing West Ham should be trying to make but you just know our owners don’t have that kind of ambition.
Special Matheus Cunha would take West Ham to another level
I would absolutely love to see us go in for the Brazilian this winter.
Now, Wolves may not sell him, but it would be nice to see us make a genuine effort to prise him away from Molineux.
The 25-year-old forward is unplayable when he’s on form, and he’s incredibly versatile as well.
Cunha can play on either wing, in the number 10 position or even through the middle as a No.9 if need be.
The former Atletico Madrid attacker is a really special player, and the fact that Nottingham Forest are even being linked with a move to sign him in the January window shows where they’re at compared to West Ham right now.
Who knows, maybe David Sullivan will prove me wrong and make a big splash in the market between now and the end of the month.
I won’t be holding my breath though, that’s for sure.
