After a humiliating 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League, including conceding twice in the same minute, Borussia Dortmund has sacked Nuri Şahin and is on the lookout for a new coach. One of the names on that list is former Bayern Munich coach Niko Kovać.
Sky Sports reporter Patrick Berger and Bild have both reported that the 53-year-old Croatian is being considered for an interim position who might stay longer if he puts out convincing results (like now-FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick when he was with Bayern). Other candidates include Roger Schmidt and disgraced Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. In the meantime, the Westphalian club has brought up U-19 coach Mark Tullberg for as the club searches for a more permanent manager.
Die Schwarzgelben is in a bit of a tight spot in the “league of Europe” because some clubs still have a game in hand and could knock the boys in black and yellow down the table; qualification to the round of 32 is still not guaranteed.
