Paul Merson has delivered his verdict on Manchester United defender Harry Maguire leaving Old Trafford for somewhere like West Ham this summer.
Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire is believed to be a transfer target for West Ham in the summer transfer window according to the likes of Manchester Evening News.

Hammers boss David Moyes will be desperate to bolster his central defensive ranks at the London Stadium, having sold Craig Dawson to Wolves in January. In addition to that, Angelo Ogbonna is now 35 whilst Kurt Zouma continues to struggle with persistent injury problems.
And one of football’s highest profile pundits isn’t sold on the idea of the 53-capped England international moving to the London Stadium either…
Paul Merson delivers Harry Maguire verdict
The Sky Sports pundit has been speaking about the 30-year-old centre-back’s uncertain future with Manchester United.
And Merson suggested that any club he joins, if he does indeed leave Old Trafford, will be a downgrade for him from Man United, via Sky Sports:
“Yeah, it’s hard though, he’s at the biggest club in the world in my opinion, I know they’re not performing like the biggest club in the world but they’re a huge club and he’s there, so wherever he goes from here is going to be a downgrade. He’s worked so hard, from where he’s come from to get to Leicester then to get to Man Utd, it’s probably hard for him to leave, but he has to leave.”
The thing is, Merson is probably right. However, that doesn’t mean that joining West Ham from Manchester United wouldn’t be a good move for him.
The fact that we sit deep would suit him down to the ground, and we would probably see more of the old Leicester Maguire, if he moved to the London Stadium.
Maguire’s teammate Luke Shaw described him as ‘unbelievable’ recently (The Mirror). I agree with the Man United left-back – the 30-year-old is one of the very best around, and he would suit the Hammers perfectly.
Hopefully Moyes brings the 30-year-old to the club this summer. I think he would be the perfect signing for us and a move to East London would reinvigorate the defender’s career as well.
