Another medal for Johnson
Ben Johnson has added another title to his belt as he helped England win their first UEFA European U21 Championship trophy for 39 years.
In a fraught and sometimes bad tempered game, the Young Lions secured a 1-0 victory against Spain in Batumi, Georgia.
Curtis Jones’ goal on the stroke of half-time gave them a lead which they ultimately held on to, despite conceding a late penalty which was brilliantly saved by James Trafford
Johnson was an unused substitute in the game, but he had played four times en route to last night’s glory as he claimed a second winners’ medal in little over a month, following on from the Iron’s UEFA Europa Conference League triumph in Prague.
Not a bad return for his time at U21 level which has now come to an end, with ten caps and now an international title as well
But, and there always is a but, even though the 23-year-old has started to play more first-team football this season, but he’s not always been that convincing, despite previously being thought of as a top prospect inside the club. And as a result he does not appear to be in David Moyes’ plans.
Whether or not he would benefit from a loan spell somewhere, I don`t know; but it would be a shame to lose another Academy lad without giving him another chance.
But it seems likely that his future lies away from the London Stadium.
