And ironically it is Manchester United at the heart of it.

Both West Ham and Man United were heavily linked with Danish sensation Rasmus Hojlund earlier in the summer transfer window.

According to a report from 90Min, Hammers boss David Moyes was keen to sign the 20-year-old Atalanta forward.

But Man United boss Erik ten Hag made the ‘new Haaland’ his prime target and won the race by at a whopping £72m.

West Ham paid around half that to sign Scamacca from Sassuolo last summer.

The Italian has been dividing opinion at West Ham as speculation continues to swirl over his future.

Many West Ham supporters want to see the Italian retained in the hope he fares better during his second season in the Premier League.

They have seen enough in glimpses to suggest there is a top level forward waiting to announce himself on the biggest stage.

Others are sick of the constant rumours and the 6ft 5in star’s public hints that he wants to return to Italy.

Rumours of a return to Roma – where Scamacca was once a youth player – has intensified ever since he publicly declared it his dream to return there and play under Jose Mourinho.

But Inter Milan emerged as frontrunners overnight by threatening to stump up around £21m for a permanent deal while Roma were only offering a loan with an obligation to buy.

That has not pleased Mourinho who, as we reported this morning, has made his feelings on Roma’s failure to sign the West Ham man perfectly clear.

Scamacca has become an unwelcome distraction for West Ham. He has made it clear he wants to return to Italy but the Irons are refusing to take a big loss on the Italy international.

Now there has been yet another twist for the Hammers. And Manchester United have played a key role.

Atalanta, like most Serie A clubs, do not have big transfer budgets at all. Italian clubs find themselves doing financial acrobatics nowadays to get top players and almost always have to sell before they can buy.

According to Sky Sports Transfer Talk, Atalanta are prepared to spend a big chunk of the Hojlund money they will receive from the Red Devils to sign West Ham striker Scamacca.

The report claims Atalanta are prepared to pay £26m – £5m more than Inter’s first offer. That is much closer to West Ham’s asking price.

And the good news is, that has forced Inter to match their offer with Sky Sports claiming they will come back with an improved bid.

West Ham are hoping to get most of their initial £30m outlay – as £5m was in add-ons which won’t be achieved – back for Scamacca.

So this is a no-lose situation for the Hammers to have two clubs in a bidding war.

And Moyes has his old club Man United to thank for that it seems.
