A disappointing first half from the Eagles did nothing more than encourage a rampant Newcastle side who took full advantage and while the statistics do not suggest such a scoreline, being clinical is key as the hosts showed.

TEB VERDICT
The less said about this performance the better. Leading up to the international break, we were crying out for the return of players and when we have two first choice central midfielders back, a result like this comes along.
To be fair, the hosts were on fire and not a lot could have stopped them but they took advantage of a poor first half and a real lack of anyone being able to hold the ball and do anything with it.
While the match statistics are not so scathing as the scoreline, it is very unlike a Roy Hodgson side to be beaten in such a manner, and they have been few and far between. But, we move on with a couple of positives, another appearance for Rak-Sakyi and the long awaited debut for Matheus Franca.
POST GAME QUOTES
ROY HODGSON
“There is nothing I want to say to take away from the Newcastle performance. We didn’t come anywhere near the football we are capable of playing, offensively or defensively. To come here and lose I can accept that but to come here and lose so comprehensively is hard to accept. We were just not anywhere near good enough. I can’t say they didn’t deserve to be 3-0 up at half time because they created a lot of chances and deserved to be ahead.
“We made uncharacteristic mistakes, defenders and midfielders making mistakes they hadn’t been making. At half time, one of our coaches said this was our first under par performance in eight games. Maybe on Monday I will have a philosophical view about it but at the moment it is hard to take. We have to be very honest with ourselves and work out why this happened and make sure we are not in another similar position.”
JOEL WARD
“It was certainly not ideal. We all know we can do better and we need to do better. We were outclassed today, it is about how we bounce back from that. In tough times it is about how you respond. There a host of things that went wrong. As individuals and as a team we look at ourselves in the mirror. We know we can do better.”
EDDIE HOWE
“We had some really nice passages of play, had some really good goal scoring opportunities. I am delighted with the attitude of the players. Jacob Murphy was excellent today, he was a constant threat. That first goal was huge in the match because Palace defend very well. Anthony Gordon has to score being an attacking player but he wants to score, he is very driven by scoring and creating. He could have had another today and I am delighted with his contribution.”
