Manchester City have announced the departure of Sergio Gomez. The full-back will join La Liga side Real Sociedad for a reported fee of €10 million, including add-ons, on a six-year deal. City have also included a 30% sell-on clause in the deal.
The 23-year-old shared some parting words with the fans, saying, “It’s time to leave Manchester City but I’d like to thank everyone at the City Football Academy for their support and guidance during my time at the club. Being part of such a talented, ambitious, and successful squad was a true honour and winning a host of major trophies, including the Treble, is something I will never forget and will always look back fondly on. I am excited for this new adventure but I wish Pep Guardiola and the players every success in the future.”
Sergio Gomez joined Man City from Belgian side Anderlecht for around £13 million in the summer of 2022. Despite his attacking prowess as a wing-back, he has been largely unused by Pep Guardiola, managing only two starts in the Premier League during his two years at the club.
The left-back came up through the youth ranks of Barcelona before joining Borussia Dortmund, failing to make a single first-team appearance for the Spanish side. Gomez also struggled for playing time at Dortmund, not starting a single Bundesliga match during his tenure there.
Gomez’s first taste of regular game time at senior level came with Huesca, where he enjoyed two successful loan spells in both the Segunda Division and La Liga. He then joined Anderlecht, enjoying a stellar campaign and being named Anderlecht’s Player of the Season. In that season, Gomez scored five goals and assisted 11 in 34 league starts, which prompted City to sign him.
An official statement from the club reads, “Sergio Gomez has left Manchester City and completed a permanent move to Real Sociedad. Gomez spent two seasons at City after signing in 2022 from Anderlecht. The 23-year-old’s spell at the Etihad saw him make 38 appearances as he helped the Blues win six trophies. The left-back was part of the squad that won the Treble of Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League in 2022/23 followed by the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Premier League across 2023/24.”
“Everyone at Manchester City sends their best wishes to Sergio ahead of his move to Real Sociedad,” the club added.
