In the final week of the German transfer window being open, there was heightened speculation that Kingsley Coman would be leaving Bayern Munich. There were a handful of clubs across Europe interested in the French winger and Bayern’s front office had said that they would be open to selling the player, having already let both Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui leave for Manchester United in the Premier League.
Most recently, there was a considerable offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal for Coman, and the transfer window for them did not close at the end of last week, so the door was left open for the player to have a final decision.
Essentially, he had to decide whether he wanted to accept the offer and head to the Saudi Pro League for significant money, or stay at Bayern and continue to fight for his spot in Vincent Kompany’s team selections.
After the 2-0 win over SC Freiburg at the Allianz Arena, in which Coman was used as a second half sub, board member for sport Max Eberl confirmed to the press that their French winger would be staying with the Rekordmeister this season. “King is staying with us,” he remarked in the mixed zone, which was picked up by Abendzeitung’s Maximilian Koch (via @iMiaSanMia).
Coman’s current contract at Bayern runs through June 2027, but the club was making a conscious effort this summer to try to alleviate the overall wage bill of the squad as much as they could. He is currently the eighth-best paid player in the squad, but his persistent injury history is something that came into consideration along with his high wages when Bayern’s front office and board were making the decision at the beginning of the summer to open the door to him potentially leaving this summer.
Now that Eberl has confirmed Coman will be staying this season, it will be more depth for Kompany as the club pushes across three fronts this season and looks to regain silverware that they missed out on last season under Thomas Tuchel. Almost out of sheer necessity, rotations will have to be made this season at crucial points, so Coman still has a significant part to play for the club, even if it is more often from the bench as opposed to the starting lineup.
