Sunday’s draw for the second round of the DFB Pokal has revealed the next fixtures of the competition. Bayern Munich’s opponent, after SSV Ulm in the first round, will be fellow Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05, as confirmed by Bayern’s official twitter account. The match will take place on October 29.
The match up against Mainz is notable for a few reasons. On one hand, Bayern will come up against two of their own players in loanees Armindo Sieb and Gabriel Vidović. As there is no rule against loanees playing against their parent club in Germany, there is a chance either of the two youngsters will score against Bayern. If so, it would be yet another creatively cruel twist the Bavarians have had to endure in the DFB-Pokal.
On the other hand, though, Mainz was the last opponent that Bayern beat in the advanced rounds of the DFB-Pokal, overwhelming Die Mainzer 4-0 in the Round of 16 in 2023, the one season since 2020 that Bayern made it past the second round of the competition. Perhaps this is a good sign…
