After being appointed as the new Germany captain, Joshua Kimmich finally seems to be growing into his leadership role at international level.
While Kimmich has always been synonymous with a leadership figure at Bayern Munich in recent years, he has never quite been “the face of the club”.
Before Bayern’s 6-1 drubbing of Holstein Kiel at Holstein Stadion, sporting director, Max Eberl, gave his vote of confidence for the 29-year-old to become one of the new faces of Die Roten.
Kimmich has since responded to Eberl’s comments (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): “Generally speaking, it’s always nice to hear the backing and support from the club. I’m just enjoying the moment. It’s important to win the games.”
Flattered by Eberl’s praises, Kimmich was asked about his availability to be a “face of the club.” The midfielder’s response may come as a surprise to some Bayern fans following a transfer window constantly linking him with a move away from Bavaria.
“Yes, I’m available,” Kimmich said.
It is quite surprising to hear Eberl refer to Kimmich as a future face of the club.
Despite a subpar 2023/24 campaign, Kimmich remains one of Bayern Munich’s best players and has certainly been a face of the club for several seasons. His ability to deputise in the midfield and at right-back, combined with an acute leadership ability, the Germany captain seems indispensable in the future of Bayern.
It sounds like Kimmich is also keen to be a part of that future. A scenario that seemed unlikely just a few weeks ago.
Hopefully Kimmich can continue his strong start to the 2024/25 campaign and prove that he is indeed one of the faces, or if not, the face of Bayern Munich.
