The first final of the new Champions League season (with its revised group/league phase) will be held at the Allianz Arena, home of Bayern Munich. It will be a second chance for Bayern to win their and for Manuel Neuer, who likes the idea of playing a UCL final in their home stadium for the second time
“2012 was also a trophyless season for us, and we had to experience that again”, Neuer said (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “Everyone knows what happened after that. The motivation in the team is very high. Of course, it would be nice to reach the final in our city.”
Neuer called time on his Germany career last month but assures the fans of the Rekordmeister that he won’t be leaving just yet. “It would be a worthy end to the season,” Neuer said (via @iMiaSanMia). “I’m not starting the season to say goodbye at the end of it. I feel very good. Time will tell how things will continue, whether I’ll continue to enjoy it and whether the club still needs me.”
The last time that the Allianz hosted a final was 2012 (no one remembers that match), being the first team in 28 years to reach the final at their home stadium since Roma in 1984. The Italians lost that match to Liverpool FC, and Bayern met the same fate in theirs.
