Bayern Munich crumbled against Unai Emery’s brand new Aston Villa. Here are the match awards (grudgingly bestowed, with extreme difficulty while choosing).
Jersey Swap: Emiliano Martinez
The Argentinian goalkeeper had a near flawless game. He was constantly on alert, and his reflexes were on point. Emi Martinez was forced to make seven saves this game (not exactly the best number from Bayern), and each of those saves was phenomenal. Despite facing an xG of 0.94, Martinez managed to keep a clean sheet for Emery’s Aston Villa, which is not exactly an easy feat to accomplish.
Der Kaiser: Nobody
Bayern Munich’s defense seemed to be in complete lapse for most of the game. Multiple mistakes, risky playing style, and just all round bad defending led to the goal scored by Jhon Duran. There were multiple dangerous instances that could have led to a goal from Villa, had it not been for a lack of finishing ability. Kim Min-jae forgot to mark his man every now and then, Dayot Upamecano was defending with zero consideration of fouls, and the rest of them created the perfect storm of mistakes (as CSmith so poetically phrased it).
Fußballgott: Joshua Kimmich
Kimmich seemed to be the only one trying to win the game on the pitch. The occasional lapse in judgement set aside, Kimmich seemed to be playing decently well in the midfield, away from his increasingly more common position at right-back. Consolation prize goes to João Palhinha for his efforts after being subbed on. Although his efforts didn’t make too much of a difference, the thought is what counts (can you tell I’m pulling at straws for these awards?).
Der Bomber: Jamal Musiala
As expected, Bayern’s star boy once again showed up. Despite being benched, and playing only 45 minutes of the game, Musiala was trying his best to put Bayern at the advantage. His efforts didn’t amount to much, but appreciated nevertheless, considering the complete and utter lack of effort from other attackers (looking at you Kane). He was responsible for creating multiple chances throughout the second half, and it is this perseverance that gives fans hope for the coming games.
Meister of the Match: Alphonso Davies
Despite not contributing too much to the defense, the Canadian had an otherwise good game. He was constantly involved in Bayern’s attack, and was seen in the final third of the pitch at key moments. His dribbling skills also seem to have improved, showcasing some of his skills against Villa today. This may be motivation for the board to renew his contract and keep him at the club for some more time.
