After a disappointing 2023/2024 season with Borussia Dortmund, in terms of individual performance, Karim Adeyemi has been a star this season. In the Bundesliga and more recently, the Champions League, the German winger has been scoring for fun with a hattrick in the first half of Tuesday’s fixture before being subbed off early in the second half.
Adeyemi picked up a knock in that match and many believed he would not receive a call-up to the national team for that reason. However, after hearing Nagelsmann’s comments it would appear that the coach didn’t have plans for the Dortmund star regardless.
“Karim Adeyemi got injured (Tuesday), but he’s been in great form and is certainly a candidate for us in the future. He’s currently a very important factor for the U-21s in these important games. For us, he may not have had a starting role. Of course the players want to play for the senior team, but presenting yourself through good performances with the U-21 is also recommendable for every player,” Nagelsmann explained (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
By reading through the lines, it seems as though Adeyemi is not yet ready to make the step to the senior squad. With recent performances, it is hard to argue that Chris Führich would be a better player.
Adeyemi’s performances almost warrant a starting position, but he will certainly need to be more consistent to become a mainstay with the senior team. For now, it appears as though he has a good attitude and is willing to play in the youth squads, something that not all players are doing.
With older players like Kleindienst stepping in, young stars like Paul Wanner, Adeyemi, and Youssoufa Moukoko might be increasingly frustrated to sit out on the fun. It seems as though Nagelsmann has been clear on form over big names, but when the big names are in form, they should be called up.
