Future Chelsea star Estevao Willian has opened up on why he decided to join the club in a recent wide ranging interview.
Chelsea agreed a deal with Brazilian club Palmeiras this summer which could be worth up to £51m for the 17-year-old, who will link up with his new team-mates next summer.
The teenager is Chelsea’s most expensive buy from South America with the club really targeting that market since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over.
Estevao reveals why he joined Chelsea
The Brazil international is widely regarded as one of, if not the biggest talent in South American football and at just 17 has already made his full debut for the national team.
Estevao has been a regular for Palmerias and has already made 38 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals and providing eight assists.
He certainly has big ambitions for his future in the game, which include going to the 2026 World Cup and becoming the best player in the world.
Estevao was highly coveted by many big clubs, but decided to join Chelsea in the end and in a recent interview he explained why he made that choice.
“I decided for Chelsea because of their planning, I was very pleased with that,” he told The Guardian.
“Not just for me, but also for my family. It was the club that believed in me and trusted in my work. I hope I can pay that back.”
When Estevao arrives at Chelsea he will be competing with the likes of Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho for minutes in the first team, which will be a tough ask.
The Brazilian has already done Palmer’s celebration after he scored for Palmeiras and detailed how he had spoken to Chelsea’s star man, who told him the pair will do great things together.
The arrival of Estevao is exciting, but Chelsea fans shouldn’t be expecting an instant impact and the Blues need to provide the right environment and pathway to nurture his incredible talent.
