Real Madrid are eyeing a shock January move for Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong as they look for a new right back according to reports.
Acheampong is a product of Chelsea’s academy and is highly rated at the club with the 18-year-old making his first team debut under Mauricio Pochettino last season.
The teenager has had a taste of action this season with Enzo Maresca giving him minutes in the 5-0 win against Barrow in the Carabao Cup, whilst he was also part of the squad for the pre-season tour of America.
Real Madrid eye Acheampong move
Acheampong faces a difficult task breaking into the first team in his preferred right back role given Chelsea have two of the best in Malo Gusto and Reece James, who recently returned to first team training.
The youngster said in a recent interview with the club that he will always be ready to play because you never know when the opportunities will come.
Acheampong definitely has the right attitude and work ethic to make it at Chelsea but given the competition for places the best step for him is to probably go out on loan.
However, The Independent have reported that Spanish giants Real Madrid are eying a January swoop for the teenager as they look for a new right back following Dani Carvajal’s ACL injury, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also an option.
The report adds Madrid are considering Acheampong as both a short term option at right back and the future of their defence, with Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham also monitoring the situation.
The Independent add Madrid have a long standing interest in Acheampong, although Chelsea’s stance is the player isn’t for sale and he’s a big part of their future plans.
Acheampong is under contract at Chelsea until 2026 and clearly has a number of clubs interested in his services and the Blues will be desperate not to lose him, but they face the tough task of convincing him there’s a clear pathway to regular minutes in the first team.
