City Football Group (CFG) managed to beat the likes of Chelsea to the signing of Independiente Medellin forward John Edwin Montano, according to TBRFootball.
It was reported last week that CFG had agreed to pay $3m (£2.3m) for the 18-year-old, with the player set to join Belgian side Lommel SK to continue his development.
However, Montano is also thought to have held discussions with Chelsea’s parent company Blueco (who also own Strasbourg), as well as the likes of Brentford and Brighton.
TBR claim that the Colombian has agreed a “long-term contract” with CFG, with the paperwork set to be officially signed over the next “few weeks”.
What do City fans need to know about Montano?
The teenager made his senior debut for Independiente Medellin earlier this year, coming on as a substitute in a league game against Fortaleza CEIF.
Montano has gone on to make 8 appearances for the first team, including his first start against Rionegro Aguila last month.
The Colombian has been capped by his country at both Under 17 and Under 20 level since the beginning of 2023. He is a winger by trade, playing off both the left and right flanks.
He has been likened to another City player
Like Montano, Savinho had also been plucked from the obscurity of South American football and sent to another City Football Group team.
The Brazilian joined Troyes in the summer of 2022 before being loaned out to PSV Eindhoven and Girona to gain more experience. The latter spell was a huge success and it led to him making the switch to the Etihad for £33.7m in July.
It remains to be seen whether Montano will take the same career trajectory as Savinho, but he is clearly a promising young talent who many other teams wanted to snap up.
