Bayern Munich is tightening belts this season and not just in the aftermath of Oktoberfest.
The bosses have launched the beginnings of a squad overhaul this summer in an effort to reduce the salary bill — but only Matthijs de Ligt among the squad’s top earners has been sold (Manchester United) as other transfer candidates like Leon Goretzka and Kingsley Coman remain at Bayern.
But with big ticket contract extensions on tap — Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané, Joshua Kimmich, not to mention Manuel Neuer — how does the financial situation shake out?
“It’s not easy of course,” Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen explained for Sport Bild in September (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “But generally speaking, Bayern did a great job in the past not only from a sporting, but also economic point of view. Our goal is to be successful in both areas. Joshua and Leroy are important players. We’re trying to keep them at the club and are in talks. Joshua should be one of the faces of the club in the future. We’re happy that Leroy is back and is on his way to 100%. We’re happy to have them and want them to stay.”
The Bavarians are going to have to find a way to make the cents make sense.
